User State Migration

With User State Migration Tool (USMT) there are three types of components that can be migrated to the new applied vDisk:

  • Operating system settings
  • Application settings
  • Users' files

USMT can be more complex to configure but is also extremely customizable, by itself or in combination with a software profile management allows you to a complete successful migration of data between upgrades.

tip

Check out how USMT works in this link.

There are three XML files used by Host Provisioning Client to load USMT:

  • Config.xml: operating-system components such as desktop wallpaper, background theme or other apps settings.
  • MigUser.xml: migrates the user profile, scans all folders on all local drives for a selected list of file types. You can disable to process this file if you are already redirecting user profile location.
  • MigAdditional.xml: an additional XML file that you can easily upload to Host Provisioning using the Administration console and that will be downloaded and applied by clients.

A sample XML file is provided in the download section. Review the USMT documentation of the Administration console to learn how to configure USMT in Host Provisioning.

tip

We recommend using FSLogix for profile management, and only use USMT if there's a program that uses a local folder you need to keep -e.g. C:\Data- that cannot be redirected to the persistent drive, or if there's a specific system configuration that for any reason cannot be kept by other way.
