User Migration Profiles

User State Migration Profiles (USMT) allows you to reestablish user profiles settings, files or folders when a computer is updated. With USMT itself or in combination with other profile management software (FSLogix, etc) you can keep configuration and data after an update or a new deployment.

For example, a folder like C:\data can be saved and later be restored. By default, common applications like browser settings and Microsoft applications are migrated.

The image needs to have been deployed with the USMT files (by default they are copied), check the Host Provisioning Preparation Tool for more details. Assign USMT Profiles to Computer Groups or Computers.

With the default files in Host Provisioning, USMT migrates the most common Microsoft application data, you can customize the files with your own settings. You can easily upload an XML file that will be synchronized with clients and servers to additionally specify more directories to migrate.

tip

You can download an example MigAdditional.xml file for migrating additional data from apps like Chrome, Edge, Adobe and a custom application that saves data in C:\Data.

tip

Modify the default XML migration configuration files by changing MigUser.xml and Config.xml in the Host Provisioning WinPE Preparation tool and create a new WinPE image. Deployed clients will have the new files.

You may also modify these files in the client's persistent native drive using Group Policies or scripts.
